The Practice of Yoga
Yoga is a complete system of self-realisation that dates back more than five thousand years. It has withstood the test of time, spreading across the globe from the Indian subcontinent.
The practice of Yoga transforms and refines every layer of a human being by employing various techniques like Asanas (postures), Pranayama (manipulation of the Life Force through the breath), and Dhyana (meditation). All limbs of Yoga aim at awakening a very subtle yet transformative energy that is said to be latent in everyone.
Through persistent and mindful efforts, this energy and vitality can arise and diffuse to the whole body, mind and breath. A regular Yoga practice brings forth abundant benefits, from relieving back pain to increased stamina, energy levels and awareness. Once the process is set in motion and the practice is not interrupted, the physical body becomes firm yet light, the mind focused, and emotional stability sets in.
Yoga is not about escaping from reality or contortionism and advanced gymnastics. Yoga is an ultimate act of self-growth and discovery, starting from where we are right now, to uncover our fullest potential.
All limbs of Yoga aim at awakening a very subtle yet transformative energy that is said to be latent in everyone.
Iyengar Yoga
In the Iyengar tradition, the depths and nuances of Asana and Pranayama are explored in great detail. Emphasis is placed on approaching each pose as an energetic structure, and Iyengar Yoga is well known for its alignment-focused practices. On the physical and mental level, alignment brings alertness, gracefulness, integration of the limbs and torso and the removal of structural blockages.
On a deeper level, alignment also means balancing the Surya nadi and the Chandra nadi, the two subtle channels that govern right and left side of the body respectively, and to bring them together into Sushumna nadi or the central channel of the spine. Self-study and enquiry become the hallmark of this rich and multi-faceted style of Yoga.
In Iyengar Yoga, we also utilise props so that the postures can be accessed from different angles and made more suitable if any limitations are present. Yoga therapy is also a distinctive feature of Iyengar Yoga, providing help and relief from different health conditions.
